Best Places to Visit in Copenhagen

I was only in Copenhagen for one day/one night. This was mainly due to google flights suggesting that the cheapest way to Europe is via Norwegian Airlines , a non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Copenhagen. It was so cheap that I couldn’t resist taking the flight just to get to Europe even if Copenhagen wasn’t on my radar. Now here’s my guide on the Best Places to Visit in Copenhagen:

FOOD

I was super jet lagged when I arrived in Copenhagen. As soon I landed in the afternoon, I relaxed, took a nap and then searched for tasty food. I didn’t have any particular restaurants in mind since I didn’t research ahead of time. Hmm I thought 24 hours in Copenhagen, how bad can it be? haha!

As I was walking around the neighborhood of my hotel (see below), I thought I could just stumble upon a cute restaurant and dine there. Unfortunately, the time frame when I was looking for food didn’t coincide with their restaurants’ timeline. In Copenhagen, restaurants close in mid afternoon to prepare for dinner time which was about after 5pm so many of the restaurants I wanted to try were preparing for dinner.

So I waited over an hour…in the meantime, I grabbed drinks at Carlton. The weather was perfect so I sat in the patio area and just people watched. It was quite interesting as I saw a lot guys wearing denim jean shorts, very different style compared to the U.S. haha! Anyway, for drinks, you have to try Somersby Cider. It is delicious if you like ciders and it comes in different flavors such as apple, blueberry, blackberry, pear, etc.

For dinner, I absolutely loved Fiske Bar in the fish market area. The food was so fresh and delicious. I also recommend getting the espresso martini, squid, cod and mussels. Be warned that this place is expensive but I think Denmark in general is expensive. That was probably the most surprising thing about Denmark for me since I didn’t realize a simple dinner with a few drinks (in a not so fancy restaurant) could cost you around $200. Nevertheless, you must try this place!

For cocktail bars, I headed to The Jane and Ruby. These were the two cocktail bars that I actually researched before my Europe trip. The drinks were good. What I liked about Ruby was that it’s across from the canal so if you’re seated by the window, the view is great. On the other hand, The Jane is located in the middle of the city so it was fun roaming around Copenhagen to get to the bar. Also, I opted to sit outside with my drink and appreciated the beautiful surroundings.

ACTIVITIES

Since I only had a few hours in Copenhagen, I didn’t do a lot except I explored the areas near my hotel. I basically just walked around and I came across the City Hall. You can’t miss this place as this is one of the largest architecture I’ve seen in Copenhagen.

Around the City Hall area, there are plenty of bars to chose from. It just so happened that I was there during the friendly game between Sweden and Denmark before the World Cup. It was fun being in a bar with Danish & Swedish people cheering for their respective team.

HOTEL

My hotel called Absalon Hotel was in the Vesterbro neighborhood which is in the center of the city. It is a few minutes from the Meatpacking district where you can find a lot of bars and restaurants, Halmtorvet is just around the corner which has a lot of cafes and Istedgade has taverns and shopping centers.

The good thing about the Absalon hotel was the location and a fantastic breakfast buffet which was included in the hotel rate. Since I was jet lagged, I was one of the first few people who had first dibs on the food as I’ve been up all night/morning. Yum!

Unfortunately, this hotel didn’t have an AC unit in the room and no fan either so it was a struggle trying to be “cool” in the room. Moreover, the bed was literally two bed combined as a queen size bed. It was so annoying, I prefer to have a bed not split up when I move. haha!

Overall, I won’t necessarily put Copenhagen on top of my travel list yet it was still nice discovering another country. I’ve enjoyed so many other places compared to Copenhagen but I have to say this may be attributed to my jet lag and not having plenty of time to discover what else this place has to offer. I’d say give it a shot if you’re already traveling in the countries nearby. For those of you who want to specifically explore the place, let me know what you think!
